Focusing on children of new immigrants in Taiwan (commonly known as “new Taiwanese children”), this study investigated changes in media choice of materials related to the image of this population over time. Based on “content analysis method”, this study collected newspaper reports on this group of citizens published during 2009~2013 from National Central Library’s “Newspaper in Taiwan” Database and “Udndata.com”.
Results indicated that among the reports published by United Daily News and Liberty Times, most reports about new Taiwanese children were in the category of “education and life”. In total, United Daily News had 310 articles related to this group of population published during this period of time, whereas Liberty Times had only 70, implying that United Daily News paid more attention to issues related to new immigrants’ children. Among the various newspaper pages, United Daily News had more articles (44.8%) published in the “general news page”, and Liberty Times had more articles (38%) published in the “news focus page”. Both publishers showed no significant orientation in their news about new Taiwanese children and had a gradual decline in the number of negative reports about them. Their reporting on the image of this population was more focused on “achievement in learning”.
