The Best Beauty Secret

It is human nature to seek and appreciate beauty. Children, you must have seen people getting dressed up for beauty. On the Internet and newspapers, they are always releasing information about the latest beauty technologies or medical products. Are you also a seeker of beauty? Have you ever thought about what you can do to become more attractive, or to earn the praises and likings of others? Are there other ways to do this?

Once there was an old monk. On his way back to the monastery, he saw a young lady who was about to jump into the river to end her life. The old monk rushed forward to try to stop her.

Although the lady was saved, she could not stop crying, and kept saying,“Let me die! Let me die!”

The old monk comforted her, “Why do you want to die? Aren't there other choices?”

“Master, you don't understand my pain! Look at me. I am so ugly. No one in my family has ever liked me since I was young. Even though I have grown up now, none of my friends like me either. A girl my age usually has a lot of admirers, but me? No boys would ever like me, and the girls don't even want to be my friends. What is the meaning of staying alive? Death solves everything!”

Upon hearing that, the old monk said,“If your problem is only about your appearance, then it is easy ! I can make you beautiful.”

The lady, half believing the old monk’s words, asked,“Really? How are you going to do that?”

The old monk replied,“Don't worry. No surgeries or cosmetic products will be involved. I have another way to make you beautiful.”

The lady then followed the old monk’s instructions.

She started to do community services such as sweeping the streets, collecting the trash, cleaning and maintaining public facilities. Sometimes she would visit the elders' in their homes to talk to them, or to the orphanage to tutor the children with their homework. When at home, she would offer to help her mother with the house chores. Sometimes she would even volunteer at the monastery on weekends to develop good affinities with everyone there. Whatever tasks others did not want to do, she would willingly and quietly complete them. Just like that, she gave service to others every day.

As time passed, the villagers began to refer to her as“a nice lady,”“very kind hearted,” or“a warm hearted lady who always offered her help.”

From then on, whenever an activity was organized, she would always be invited. A lot of people even liked her very. The lady then met a young man who adored her dearly.

After some time, having decided to marry this young man, she came to the old monk to share the good news and to thank him.

The old monk asked with a smile,“So, did my beauty secret work for you?”

As a Buddhism saying goes,“Before attaining Buddhahood, one needs to develop good affinities with others first.” Children, now you shall know that developing good affinities and being of service to others are the most precious beauty products.
